One of the objects of the recent cruise of H.M.A.S. Melbourne round New Zealand was to keep in touch and work with the Chatham as well as to return the visit paid by that ship to Australia eighteen months or so ago. The visit of the Commonwealth cruiser aroused considerable enthusiasm at every port visited in the Dominion and the officers and men were warmly entertained. From Dunedin the Melbourne went on to Milford Sound, and returned theace direct to Jervis Bay, Soon after leaving New Zealand very heavy weather was experienced, and one of the lifeboats was smashed to fragments.
