    The Archbishop of Reims was heartbroken when he learned in Paris of the destruction of his Cathedral and the levelling of a large portion of the city. "What terrible punishments God must be reserving for this German nation which commits so many acts of sacrilege," he said. "It is more than ever necessary that I should return without further delay to Reims, that I may soothe the wounds of my poor diocesans and, on the ruins of our city, call upon the justice of an avenging God."
