The fierce battles now being fought in the western theatre of war may be described as "the battles of the trenches." At first, we are told, the British and French did not trouble to entrench themselves in very thorough fashion, being content with throwing up a mound for protection; but they soon profited by the example of the methodical Germans, who prepared their trenches in very elaborate style, and in the fighting now in progress the trenches on both sides are said to be unusually deep and wide, with, in many cases, tunnels connecting them.
