  2. DESTROYED BY THE CRUISER SYDNEY: THE GERMAN CRUISER EMDEN.

    The Emden, which since the beginning of the war had sunk 19 vessels in the Indian Ocean, captured but released two others, and had daringly shelled Madras, had her exciting career ended by the Australian cruiser Sydney on Tuesday, 10th November, at Cocos Island. The German cruiser arrived at 6 a.m., and sent ashore a landing party of three officers and 40 men with machine guns. The cable station sent out an urgent wireless call for help. This was picked up by the Sydney, which steamed at full speed to the island, arriving just as the landing party was returning to the Emden after smashing the instruments, wireless installation, and engines at the cable station. The German cruiser put out to sea, and in the engagement that ensued, lasting an hour, lost two funnels ... [ILLUSTRATED]
