Captain Glossop of H.M.A.S. Sydney, has won imperishable renown by destroying the German raider Emden. He is well known in the principal Australian cities having served for many years in various Imperial ships before his appointment to the Sydney. He was on the Calliope when that British cruiser, in March, 1889 made her sensational escape from Apia Harbour in the face of a disastrous hurricane. He afterwards served on the Royalist as a lieutenant, then on the Lizard as lieutenant-commander, and on the Prometheus, as commander.
