  4. FINISH OF THE GREAT RACE ON THE PARRAMATTA RIVER LAST SATURDAY.

    The race between James Paddon, holder of the title, and Richard Arnst for the Sculling Championship of Australia created tremendous interest in sporting circles in Sydney. Many thousands of people lined the banks of the river, and were rewarded by seeing a splendid contest. Soon after the start Paddon gained a slight advantage, and, although he kept ahead throughout the 3 miles 330 yards course, he had to fight right to the finish, for Arnst made spurt after spurt, and all but drew level on several occasions. A strong breeze and choppy water kept the pace down somewhat, but the champion's time, 21m 45s, was considered good pulling under the prevailing ... [ILLUSTRATED]
