Many thousands of people lined the banks of the river, and were rewarded by seeing a splendid contest. Soon after the start Paddon gained a slight advantage, and, although he kept ahead throughout the 3 miles 330 yards course, he had to fight right to the finish, for Arnst made spurt after spurt, and all but drew level on several occasions.
