Lady Randolph Churchill, who was formerly an American belle, with several other American ladies at the outset of the war set to work to equip the hospital ship Maine, presented by an American shipping company for the purpose. The work was taken up with great enthusiasm, and Americans in the colony, at the requeit of Lady Churchill, conveyed through Mr. J. C. Williamson, who organised a notable theatrical benefit, assisted the funds. When the ship, with her American doctors and nurses, visited England on her way to South Africa, she and they were received with great distinction.
