This remarkable picture brings the reality of the water hyacinth pest vividly before those who have never seen the weed in control of a watercourse. Once it becomes established it is almost impossible to eradicate it, and, although attacks are made on it every season, the channels cut through it are quickly filled up by the fast-growing plant. Our photograph was taken last week on Swan Creek, a tributary of the Clarence River, where navigation has been completely suspended.
