These picture, taken at the Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney last week, are remarkable for the fact that they include what are believed to be the first seldom seen, and when it is disturbed in the daytime it makes straight for the bottom of the river or creek in the banks of which it has its buri[?] Normally, it does not swim on the surface even at night, but grovels about the bottom for food, coming up to breathe every two or three minutes. In these picture, however, perhaps because the water is shallow, it is keeping to the surface. The platypus, of course, is one of the world's must interesting creatures. A link between the reptiles and the mammals, is has the velvety for of the mote and the bill and webbed feet of the duck. The female builds a nest and lays eggs, yet suckles its young. The male has fighting spurs like a gamecock and poison glands like a snakeāand Australia is the only country in which it has ever been found. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
