    Enormous crowds watched this thrilling feat of axemanship in the special ring set apart for the wood-choppers. Each man had to cut notches in the trunk of his "tree" and insert springboards until he reached a height of 10ft 6in, then, after chopping halfway through the 13-inch trunk, descend to the ground and repeat the performance on the other side. The excitement as the contest proceeded was intense, and when the two axemen nearest the camera outdistanced the others and fought out the New South Wales championship between them thousands of voices ...
