  2. The Tree-Felling Championship of N.S.W.

    This is easily the most spectacular of all the wood-chopping contests at the Show. Each competitor has to notch his way up to a height of 15ft by means of springboards inserted in the trunk by himself as he ascends. Then he cuts the 13in "tree" half-way through, descends, and repeats the performance on the other side. Only the most expert of timber-getters enter this contest, and the fact that the man who won this year (W. Johnston) finished his task in 3 minutes 31 1-5th seconds indicates the amazing agility, strength, and speed of the axemen. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
