    Townsville, with a population of over 30,000, now looks upon herself as the second city of Queensland. It is situated on the shores of Cleveland Bay, well north of the Tropic of Capricorn, and its harbour, protected both by the natural breakwater of Magnetic Island and the artificial one erected by the port authorities, is a place of call for many of the larger coastal and over-sea steamers.
