Details of the Americans' first experience of actual warfare in France show thai the Germans first barraged the trenches, which formed a salient, and cut off a group of Americans. A raid followed, the Americans being attacked by a much superior force of German shock troops. They fought gallantly and fiercely hand-to-hand, until they were overwhelmed by force of numbers. Three were killed, five wounded, and twelve captured. Two French officers, instructing the Americans, were also killed. The Germans lost a number, whom they carried off the field.
