    Only the fringe of Australia is timber-clad, and there are even gaps in the fringe. Nobody knows what area of forest we actually possess, and estimates of the [?] of our commercial timbers are most unreliable. Alienation of land unsuitable for anything but the growing of trees still goes on, accompanied by the wholesale destruction of giants that have taken generations to grow. Some of the States are now waking up to a realisation of the seriousness of the position, but others ore content to leave their forests at the mercy of the politicians, whose inability to handle them as a national asset is notorious. ...
