It will surprise the younger generation in Sydney to know thai before the present General Post Office was built there was no wide thoroughfare between George and Pitt streets where Martin-place runs to-day. Instead, there was a narrow right-of-way along what is now the pavement in front of the Post Office, and near ihe Pitt-street end of this lane the Tank Stream was crossed by a wooden bridge. It was not till the laie 'eighties that Martin-place was laid out, although the G.P.O. was opened in 1874.
