  2. THE STORY OF GEORGE - STREET. A CHAPTER IN OLD SYDNEY.

    George-street, Sydney, was the first substantial thoroughfare planned in Australia. In the early days of settlement, when the embryo city comprised little more than a Governor's "residence" a barracks, a hospital, and a few stores, all these "public buildings," except the Governor's canvas hut, were situated on what is now the site of George-street North. Gradually the street was formed and extended, until it reached out into the country, and one by one buildings were erected along its course, until it became the recognised business centre of the community.
