The start for the Rowing Championship-in five-oared Whalers-of Sydney Harbour. Two crews competed, one representing H.M.S. Torch (challengers) and the other the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (holders of the championship). The event was responsible for a remarkable scene of animation and enthusiasm in Farm Cove, where white-clad sailors-the Tars being in working rig-swarmed on the decks of the warships and cheered the Torch crew tumultuously.
