  2. The Rhine of Australia: The Beautiful Hawkesbury River

    The Hawkesbury River is noted throughout the world for the picturesque scenery along its banks. Many years ago Anthony Trollope, the fam[?] novelist, described it as "the Rbine of Australia," and many other travellers of world-wide fame have since then eloquently referred to its manifold beauties. Some of the Hawkesbury settlements are among the oldest in the Commonwealth. Much of this country was surveyed during Governor Phillip tenure of office. The small statement at Port Jackson was for a time threatened with extinction by famine, and discovery of the fertile Hawkesbury lands was hailed with delight as providing against a recurrence of that danger. Our photograph shows the village of Wiseman's Ferry, which is [?]turesquely situated opposite the junction of the Macdonald Hawkesbury rivers. A glorious view the two rivers and the surrounding country is obtained from the hill behind the township. Motorists need to exercise care in descending the winding road, which is the main road from Sydney to the north connection with a punt at the Ferry.
