  2. SYDNEY'S HISTORIC HIGHWAY TO THE WEST.

    The old, winding bullock track that became George-street, Sydney, swung westward at a point that is now crowned by the Central Railway Station. For something less than a mile it is known as George-street West, and that is the section shown above. Near the University, which is in a park enclosure on the southern side of the road, the highway becomes Parramatta-road. Very little that is of historic interest in the growth of western New South Wales can be treated without reference to this old road. The dip "down the hill" was until recently not a very pleasing quarter, but it is now industrial and important. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
