It is a replies of one exhibited by his brother at the Royal Academy in 1879, which was very favourably noticed at the time. In represents a scene in the Lagune of Venice, the sunset shedding its light over a broad expanse of placid water. A boatman and his young wife have stopped before the shrine of the Virgin, which rises with a flight of stairs, upon a timber platform, erected in the midst of the Lagune. There they pause, at the sound of a distant church bell, to offer their humble adoration; and to realise in heart, as we may admit without professing their creed, that ever womanly and truly motherly aspect of tenderness, which is surely comprehended with all else in the infinite perfection of Divine Love.] ...
