  2. A CURIOSITY OF THE BUSH: DEAD TREE TURNS A COMPLETE SOMERSAULT AT SOUTH SASSAFRAS

    Mr. John Clarke, of Ocean street, Hampton, who took the photograph, writes:— "A little way past the post-office the new road turns off to the right to Monbulk. A few hundred yards along this road, on the left hand side, may be seen a fair tall dead eucalypt with an acute angular break at the top, and farther down the bank towards the creek will be seen another less tall gum apparently in its natural position, also showing at its top a break similar to the first under notice. A few yards farther along this road the Tourists' Track comes quite close, and by walking down this path towards the tree the full effect will be realised. In some storm the upper portion of the parent tree, with heavy top branches, has [?] off short and must have in descending described a complete somersault. The enormous weight may be judged by its height and girth, being driven into the ground erect, and apparently firm and safe." Experts say this is a somewhat unusual ... [ILLUSTRATED]
