    LIEUT-GEN SIR HERBERT LUMSDEN, DSO and Bar, MC, who has been appointed Mr Churchill's special representative with Gen Douglas MacArthur, C-in-C SW Pacific, was born on April 8, 1897. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and in 1915 went off to serve in the Great War as a second lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.
