  4. Pope Paul's first encyclical (letter), on the role of the Roman Catholic Church in the modern world, was published yesterday in various languages. The Pope signed the oflicial Latin copies of his 14,000 word document and then presented gold medals to the four prelates who spent 15 days translating it from Italian into Latin, the church's oflicial language. Later, giving his blessing to pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of the Papal villa, he said it was not a great or extraordinary encyclical, but "it competes with the most famous, alas for length."
