  3. SICILY TAKES ANOTHER HEAVY HAMMERING

    LONDON, Friday.—Sicily received another heavy hammering yesterday, when heavy damage was caused to the Messina ferry terminus and railway sidings. Other important centres also were pounded, making the ninth attack in two days. In these operations, nine enemy planes were shot down and four more probably destroyed. We also scored a direct hit on an enemy supply ship. All our planes returned from these and other operations. The Algiers Radio says that while British troops are concentrating in Syria the Royal Navy is concentrating in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Rome Radio says a new phase of aerial warfare began on Friday, when the whole weight of the Allied air forces in North Africa was directed against the Italian mainland, but Italy is resolved not to yield, either to renewed and extremely violent air offensives or treacherous and sometimes tempting offers from Allied radio stations. ...
