  4. 1500 RESCUED FROM BLAZING TROOPSHIP

    Nearly 1000 people including 160 women and children, were rescued when the British troopship Empire Windrush, or 14,800 tons, caught fire in the Mediterranean about 36 miles north-west of Algiers. The fire is reported to have started in the engine room where four members of the crew lost their lives.
