  5. HISTORY MADE BY ALLIED AIRMEN

    Six airmen of an R.A.F. squadron were the first Allied troops to board an Italian warship after the Italian surrender. They were the crew of an R.A.F. Wellington reconnaissance aircraft, and were picked up by an Italian destroyer on its way with the surrendered Italian ships to Malta. Owing to engine trouble they had to put their aircraft down in the Straits of [?] and had spent 20 hours in their dinghy before being picked up.
