  3. "GOOSIE, GOOSIE, GANDER, WHITHER DID YOU WANDER?"

    Very likely the nursery rhyme line came into the mind of this little chap when two swans waddled from the lake in the Botanic Gardens to be fed by him. Their overtures were a novelty, for hitherto he had been able to coax the graceful birds only to the water's edge. There is a touch of experiment in the way he is holding out the til-bit—the angle compels the swan to employ the full length of its neck, "I took the bend out of it." he probably told his mates when proudly recounting the story. ...
