    HIS SMILE OF VICTORY.—Mr. Prendergast, after 29 years on the Opposition benches, at last sees the Premiership within his grasp. Yesterday the Governor (Lord Stradbroke) sent for him, and after ten minutes' consultation, Mr. Prendergast left the Executive Council Chamber with the Governor’s commission to form a Cabinet From the Opposition. During Labor's 13 days’ term of office in 1913, Mr. Prendergast was Chief Secretary. It was then that he issued his famous memorandum forbidding the use of the third degree by the police.
