  7. THE PEAR AND CHERRY SLUU The pear and cherry slug feeds on the upper surface of leaves of pears, cherries, quincces and plums. Only the surface leaf tissue is eaten, a skeleton of veins remaining, and, in cases of severe infestation, a trees may lose a considerable portion of its leaf area. The leaves are a food-producing portion of the plant, and, when extensive damage has been done to them, the trees’ ability to produce a satisfactory crop in the following season a impaired. Horticultural officers of the Victorian Department of Agriulture point out that the pest may be readily controlled by sprays of lead menate, 2 lb. powder per 1.00 gallons water, or D.D.T, (0.1 per cent). Cherries and plums should be sprayed as soon as live insects are noticed after the Crop has been picked.
