Garden, who had an indifferent hearing, said that 70,000 people were present. Police estimate the crowd at between 7000 and 8000. The "Red Flag" was sung, and fiery speeches were made, but there was trouble until the crowd tried to reach Parliament House. Police guards in Macquarie Street drew batons, and forced the crowd back.
