    In 1848 the Hungarians rose against the Austrian rule. Francis Joseph, then only 19 years of age, after the rebellion was subdued, had the Hungarian people treated with ruthless severity. Women were flagged in day light at the cart-tail, and men were shot and hanged wholesale. The Italians were treated with like cruelty, and the Serbs were likewise suppressed with an iron hand. The hideous crime, in 1909, after the annexation of Bosnia and Herzgovina, is fresh in men's minds. Croatians, Czechs, Serbs, Italians, and Roumanians have suffered alike from Austria's tyranny. ...
