    "The Martyrdom of St. Alexander," a beautiful picture by a modern Italian artist, P. Loverini. Alexander, a tribune in the Theban Legion, was arrested at Milan and condemned to death for being a Christian. He escaped from prison, but was recaptured outside the walls of Bergamo, where he was beheaded in the presence of the Roman Emperor (297 A.D.). The "Acts" of his martyrdom are preserved at Bergamo, and in the Cathedral of that city his remains are venerated. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
