Whilst photographing an alligator in the swamps of Florida (U.S.A.), Mr. Van Campen Heilner. acting in the interests of the Audubon Society, of the great egret rookeries, had a marvellously narrow escape from death. After wandering many miles in search of rookeries, the photographer and his friend, when almost in sight of the island on which a rookery was said to exist, perceived lying on the surface of the muck and clime the form of a huge alligator.
