A party of prospectors, of which Joe Hack, the narrator of this incident, was one, were encamped one summer in the Sugar Creek Canyon in the central part of Colorado. Their provision shack was often raided, by grizzlies, the smaller animals being frightened off by the barking of the two dogs, which accompanied the party.
