Just before the armistice with Austria was signed two new enemy divisions were thrown into the front line oil the Lower Piave. They were soldiers from Bosnia, and this was their first taste of fighting against the Italians. The ground on which the attack took place was marshy, with very little chance of manoeuvring, and eventually the battle resolved itself into hand-to-hand struggles of the most sanguinary character.
