  4. MAN'S FIGHT FOR DESERT GOLD: FIRST GRANITES PICTURES

The first pictures received from the Granites, the lonely goldfields in the heart of Australia, about 400 miles north of Alice Springs. Top—A scene on the Burdekin Duck claim, which was sold for £5,000, where members of the Chapman expedition are sinking a third shaft to cross-cut a reported rich leader. Bottom, left—The Granites, a ridge of great, stark boulders, the only break in a 100—mile stretch of spinifex desert. Centre—Jack Atherton the "father" of the field which is holding the attention of people all over Australia. Right—A lonely grave. The tomb of Fred Brooks, who was killed by blacks at Brooks' Soak, three years ago. The stone was erected by Randal Stafford, his mate. These graphic pictures were taken exclusively for "The News" by Ernestine Hill, one of the first women to visit the lonely fields. Other exclusive pictures on Back Page. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
