  3. CONGESTION ON SYDNEY WATERFRONT AS WHARVES OVERFLOW WITH INCOMING CARGO

    Cargo is flowing into Sydney wharves faster than it is being removed. During the week-end 30 ships were unloaded but cargoes from only three ships were carted from the wharves. Congestion yesterday was so bad that truck drivers found goods fenced in by freshly discharged cargoes. The Adelaide Star, with 13,500 tons of cargo to discharge at Glebe Island, found the berth banks so overcrowded that it had to cut its waterfront labour from 12 gangs to two.
