    When the steel works were established at Port Waratah in Newcastle, the age of coal became the age of steel, and the old city awakened to a new prosperity. It was reckoned in 1920 that, with a favorable tariff, these works alone would be responsible for an additional population of 20,000 in several years, on the basis of a workman, his wife, and family of two. This basic industry was responsible for the establishment of many subsidiary concerns, including the great works of Lysaghts, Limited, and the Austral Nail Company. The latter was transferred from Melbourne after 20 years' existence there. When all these concerns were working at top pressure Newcastle was described as the "Birmingham of Australia." ...
