  3. Dredging Experiment With Aero Jet Engine

    The present dredger system of clearing mud off the bottom of the River Thames may soon be obsoleteif an experiment fried last week proves successful. For this experiment a jet gas turbine aircraft engine, similar to those used in mine of the earlier Gloster Meteor aircraft. was fitted to the nose of a barge and lowed out into the river. When Marled up. the jet engine created a terrific turbulence of water and in this way it if expected that the thick mud at the bottom of the river hed will be loosened and swirled away. During last winter's blizzards the same engine was mounted on a railway wagon and succeeded in dispersing a 30 ft. drift of enow, 6 ft. deep, in 30 seconds.
