    In the early stages this island Was said to have disappeared, but, apparently, it was only enveloped in smoke, and soon began to belch forth great volumes of steam, mud, and ashes, and to throw boulders thousands of feet into the air. Then suddenly, according to an observer, the water began to play antics and the island rose up so that where, preciously, there had been water and a few rocks there was now solid land. The photograph shows how the flowing pumice has spread on all sides until the base of the island—it is now really a peninsula—is about 1200 yards wide, with the crater—nearly 700 ... [ILLUSTRATED]
