The Marshall Islands, in the Western Pacific, were annexed by Germany in 1885. They are now occupied by Japan, who, it is generally believed, will at the Peace Conference press her claim to exercise a protectorate over this group as well as the Carolines. Mr. T. J. M'Mahon (who obtained these photographs during a tour from which he has just returned to Sydney) says that since their occupation the Japanese have made wonderful improvements in the settlements.
