  2. WHERE OXLEY STOOD ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

    Exactly one hundred years ago yesterday—on October 8, 1818—the Surveyor-General, John Oxley, who had been despatched from Sydney by Governor Macquarie on an expedition with the object of discovering whether or not a great inland sea existed, came upon a large river, which he named the Hastings. Following this down, the party reached an extensive inlet, which was christened Port Macquarie, and there, three years later, a settlement was established.
