  3. HAY WENT UP IN SMOKE

    About £500 worth of baled lucerne hay and straw and oaten sheaves, used in the construction of the agricultural arch on Gladstone Road during Rockhampton Centenary celebrations, were destroyed by fire on Friday night. Fortunately bales of raw cotton and cream cans, included in the decorations, had been removed a few hours earlier. A quantity of tubular steel scaffolding, wlfich formed the skeleton of the arch, was also destroyed by the heat. The arch, which was insured, was to have been removed on Monday. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
