  3. QUEEN DISTRIBUTES MAUNDY MONEY

    The Queen carried out the first public engagement of her reign on April 15, when she distributed the Royal Maundy Money in Westminster Abbey. This year 26 aged men and women—one for each year of the Sovereign's age—received 26 specially minted silver Maundy pence—which bore the impression of the head of King George VI, as there had been insufficient time to alter the effigy to that of the Queen.
