  4. CHECKING "A BATCH" FROM THE ATOMIC OVEN

    Radio-ac ve isotopes are being produced, at Britain's Atomic Research Establishment at Harwell. Here a sample is being taken out after irradiation in an atomic pile, the face of which is in the background. The sample is in the aluminium container, which during irradiation is placed in one of the holes in the graphite block (bottom right). These blocks are pushed into the pile through an opening in the concrete shield at the end of the lead tunnel, (shown with handles). ... [ILLUSTRATED]
