  6. WHY WANGANUI RAN OFF IN THE EPSOM CUP

    There were two reasons why Wanganui ran off at the first turn in the Epsom Cup run at Mentone on Saturday. He was galloped on by Lord Windburra, probably just as this picture was taken (note Lord Windburra’s foreleg about to make contact). The inside of Wanganui’s off hind fetlock was badly cut. The horse is now in a veterinary hospital and will not be able to race for months. It might have been this, or it might have been the fact that the bit slipped through his mouth (note position of bit in picture) that decided Wanganui to quit.
