The harbor is a narrow, open roadstead, into which the Grey River pours at a tremendous rate. The navigation of this harbor is one of the supreme tests of the ability of the masters. Cases of bumping are not infrequent. A West Coast master will tell you that there is always a dirty sea on the Greymouth bar, and these pictures would seem to bear this out.
