Summary
  • Functional foods or nutraceuticals are products that have been chemically enhanced to improve health or prevent disease. These are the fastest growth area in the food sector with strong demand from health-conscious shoppers. Research group Mintel found the British are increasingly aware of the health implications of what they eat. The new health-enhancing nutraceuticals are able to make direct claims about the impact they can have. There are 102 different functional foods and drinks in nine European countries but the US is the biggest market. In 1998 Americans bought GB[pound] 9bn of nutraceuticals while in Europe the market was GB[pound] 830mn. By the end of 2000 the European market will top GB[pound] 2bn and the US will have grown to GB[pound] 11bn. Sales of functional foods in Britain topped GB[pound] 250mn in 1999. Price will be the most important factor for growth and the foods will need to be marketed at lower premiums than at present. Functional foods have to compete directly with organic foods, as both are healthy options, although organic has the head start.
