Summary
  • The FCC has given Bell Atlantic permission to sell network capacity to video- and information-service providers, marking the first time the commission has let a local telephone company supply video service on its network. Other companies have similar applications pending. The FCC's approval of Bell Atlantic's application for a video dial-tone system will pave the way for the telephone carrier to enter a regional marketplace with two cable TV providers. The commission's video dial-tone regulations allow local telephone companies to ask for permission to enhance their networks and produce an open transmission platform to non-affiliated providers of video signals and other upgraded services. To provide for the new services, the telephone company will install switched digital fiber-to-the-curb technology. The network will initially offer a 64-channel digital capacity.
