Summary
  • Disk operating system (DOS) is becoming more rare in new product developments as companies take advantage of the new OpenDoc specification and OLE. The decline in popularity of DOS was increased with a false rumor that WordPerfect would discontinue production of DOS-based word processing software. The company denied the report and revealed a strategy for future DOS development but agreed that DOS usage is declining. Borland International has also placed DOS development behind other platforms and has no plans to release DOS upgrades to Paradox or Quattro Pro. Lotus and Symantec Corp, on the other hand, intend to continue developing products based on DOS. 1993 sales of DOS declined 25% from 1992, with net sales of $1.93 billion, while sales of Windows applications rose almost 80% to $3.47 billion. 1993 was the first year that DOS applications were outsold by Windows applications.
